The Men’s Blow Dry is Back, Here’s All You Need Know
We’ve all seen that guy in the gym changing room, you know the one, admiring himself lovingly as he blow-dries his hair for a minimum of 15 minutes wearing only a towel or sometimes nothing at all. You’ve never taken much notice before, because it didn’t matter. You just towel-dried, chucked some product in your hair and ran. But now you’re going to want him to be quick so you can take your turn in front of the mirror, because the blow dry is back.
At men's fashion week the blow dry made an explosive return and everywhere you look, blow-dried hair is taking centre stage. It’s fair to say that it’s back with a vengeance, but how can you ride this trend with style and not end up looking like a poodle just back from a base jump? We’ve got some top tips to bring you up to speed and make you the blow dry master!
Up your tool game
If you’re blow-drying at home, then the first thing to consider is investing in some decent tools. A professional hairdryer with a nozzle will allow you to control the air flow and heat distribution, then depending on the length of your hair and your desired result you will need a brush. A vent brush is ideal.
Prepping your hair is key, so you need to make sure you are using the correct shampoo for your hair and scalp. If you have curly, frizzy or unruly hair you should use a leave in conditioner to de-tangle and condition your hair. Next you need to consider a styling product. Think about what you want to create with your hair and how you want it to look. A product with root boost is ideal to give your hair lift and volume.
Emulsify to activate
When applying product to your hair, put some on your hands and rub the product in well to emulsify it before putting it into your hair. This action activates the product and makes it work more effectively. This is the same for creams, waxes and gels. If you’re using a foam or root boost product, you can comb it through your hair for even coverage.
Nail your hairdryer technique
Use your hairdryer on a high heat and medium speed with your selected brush. If you want to create some volume in your hair, work with your brush making sure you are concentrating on the root areas and applying heat to the roots, moving the brush and the hairdryer at the same time. Using a sweeping motion, point the nozzle backwards and upwards while giving your hair a slight upward tug for more lift.
Finish to perfection
Once the hair is completely dry, you then need to select a finishing product. Always keep in mind what kind of finished look you are trying to achieve and choose the appropriate product. If you have shorter more textured hair you might want to use a wax or clay. If your hair is longer and you want to create more of a sleek wetter look you should use a gel or pomade.
Finally, to seal the deal and to make your hair last all day or all night you should finish with a hairspray or gel spray to give you additional hold and shine.
